About this deal

The girls went to prison, were released and life moved on for the village of Hadley after the inevitable fallout. I’m hoping this is going be the start of a relationship with the character of Ben Harper…he definitely has more stories in him.

I have worked within Sales for much of my career and while I have always been very close to the publishing process it is a very different experience as an author.

I love an “old murder mystery hasn’t been fully solved” setup, and I loved that this was in London but not central London, so the location where everything happened had a village feel, and a real sense of community because of it. My thanks to NetGalley and Little, Brown Book Group, Sphere for giving me the chance to read the ARC in exchange for my honest opinion. After reading an interview with the author, I understand that PC Dani Cash will have more of a presence in the second novel in the series. We meet a variety of intriguing characters, many of whom get their own POV chapters, and most of them seem to be hiding something.

Robert Gold | Hachette UK

This was such a dream of a thriller I was completely hooked throughout and I have to say I was suspecting everyone! When another murder brings it all back to haunt the idyllic town we see how secrets are a dangerous thing and the book grabs you in a vice like grip as you uncover them all. Originally from Harrogate in North Yorkshire, Robert Gold began his career as an intern at the American broadcaster CNN, based in Washington DC. Initially, Ben has no intention of complying with Wilson's relentless demands, but then he hears about a woman murdered in Farsley, Yorkshire, her killing emulating the exact MO used on Nick and Simon. Fast forward to the present and both girls are now living in different communities with new identities. As Ben investigates events of the past it's like layers of an onion being peeled away and secrets are discovered. Gold is certainly going to make a splash with this, the first of a series, particularly with the creation of his central protagonist, Ben Harper, who has his life derailed as a child with the loss of his beloved brother, Nick, a grief that goes on to be compounded with the loss of the only person he had left, his mother. An unforgettable and nuanced cast of characters, a claustrophobic setting, and a suspenseful and chilling examination of the dark and destructive power of secrets.

Even when the girls, now women, were released into the community with new identities, Ben and his mother weathered the further heartache and carried on with their work and home lives. This book will take over all your free time and you will be gutted when it's ends and wish you could reread it all over again for the 1st time. Ben's brother Nick was murdered in woods along with his friend, two girls were arrested for their murder.

Twelve Secrets : The Sunday Times bestselling thriller

He does – however – have some unanswered questions and another death… and the inevitability of media attention, means he decides to take matters into his own hands and find the answers he’s after. Ben is initially reluctant to dredge up the past but when the police turn up to ask Ben about a murder miles away it raises questions about the original murder. And because the murder was high profile we learn he’s been thrust unhappily into the spotlight twice… so not at all tempted to put himself back there by sharing his own story of the tragedies on the anniversary. The storyline is believable as are the characters and this makes it a brilliant story to get lost in.What are the connections with the inter-school rugby final that Nick’s team had won shortly before the murders? This book isn’t due out until next year, but it’s one I would highly recommend you to add to your wish list right now. If i had to select say 5 books that people must read next year then this would definitely be on the list!
