Longrow Single Malt: Longrow is a double distilled, highly peated, smokey single malt whisky that resulted from a unique experiment by Springbank’s chairman. Springbank’s Longrow Single Malt is available in three bottlings, namely Peated, Red, and an 18-year-old. More this month from the powerhouse that is the Springbank Distillery. This time, let’s try their lighter side – a triple distilled, bourbon matured, smooth and light whisky – The Hazelburn 10 year old. Distilled three times to ensure a light, fruity and flowery malt that is the hallmark of the Hazelburn brand. Glen Scotia has always produced peated and non-peated whiskies, both maintained in their modern whisky production, allowing the distillery to preserve their own character. The standard flavours of Glen Scotia’s single malts include sea salt, vanilla, oak, ginger, apricot, orange. Today, Glen Scotia’s whiskies include: Established in 1828 by Archibald Mitchell, Springbank is one of the few Scottish distilleries that has remained in the hands of the founding family, J. & A. Mitchell & Co. Ltd. In fact, it’s the oldest independent, family-owned distillery in Scotland. This family are also the force behind the Glengyle distillery where Kilkerran is made. I do also take a small bit of pleasure in winding up a few Scottish folk who ‘cannae get thur hawns’ on a bottle especially with my ill-gotten reputation of not actually liking anything from Springbank. A score of 3 out of 10 on a previous Springbank 15 will seemingly haunt me until the end of days, although I was only barred temporarily from the IAAS.

Hazelburn 10 års Single Malt 46% kommer fra Springbank Distillery i Campbeltown. A promising start with delicately glazed cherries and a woody dampness. Chocolate raisins, an old shoe and all-spice. It takes a bit of prizing out at first. Sooty, red liquorice and dried bark. A slice of tangerine given time and chocolate mint leaf. I’m also reminded of tiramisu with a handful of fresh coffee beans and some vanilla notes. Hazelburn is one of three styles of whisky produced at Springbank, known for being triple distilled and unpeated, whereas Springbank single malt is distilled two-and-a-half times and is lightly peated, and Longrow single malt is twice distilled and heavily peated. Official tasting notes: The nose is excellent given time and a patient approach. It offers layers and an example of where the PX cask hasn’t dominated the distillate, which you rarely see nowadays. The majority of distillates (especially from new distilleries) are often brutalised by the host sherry wood. Resulting in a dram that is more sherry than whisky and samey across the industry. This bottling confirms the staunch robust nature of the Springbank distillate and on the nose it works extremely well. Year Old: With hints of vanilla oak, sea spray, and fruit, this whisky is matured in American oak barrels before bottling.Hos Springbank producerer man 3 distinkte typer whisky, som differentierer sig på en række parametre. Den klassiske Springbank har en let tørverøg. Røgniveauet angives (noget upræcist) med en måling af fenol i den færdigmaltede byg og ligger på cirka 10-15 ”parts per milion” (malten tørres 6 timer med tørverøg og 30 timer med varm luft).
